Despite wet conditions at Winton Motor Raceway today, the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series is ready to fire up for round two of the 2014 Series across 13-15 June.

This weekend’s event is the first featuring the new ‘State of Origin’ concept, which allows competitors the chance to compete as ‘state of origin’ entrants in the national Series at two rounds across the year, one of which must be held in their home state.

Fifty four year old motor technician Peter Beninca of Surrey Hills in Victoria is one of two racers who have heeded the State of Origin call. Beninca will be on track in his normally aspirated (two litre), Nissan X-Trail powered Beninca Motors/Autronic Fuel injection systems Alfa Romeo GTV this weekend.

“I have a long history in two litre sports sedan racing and I can’t wait to get on track for racing at Winton Motor Raceway, it is a great circuit,” said Beninca.

“Being a short track kind of circuit I think my car will have an advantage over some of the other competitors as the type of track really suits these smaller capacity cars.

“I ran at the event last year and I really enjoyed my time out there, so with the State of Origin Series offering a chance for me to compete again I was sure to jump at it. “Hopefully if I can get the funds together I will also race at Phillip Island, but we just have to wait and see – for now, I will just get out there at Winton and give it the best go I can.”

The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series undertook unofficial practice at Winton Motor Raceway today, ahead of practice and qualifying Saturday 14 June and three races on Sunday 15 June. The Kerrick Sports Sedan Series is one of the most exciting on the annual Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals calendar, pitting a range of ‘wild and winged’ modified sports sedans and trans-ams against each other. Part of The Nationals since its inception in 2006, the Kerrick Sports Sedans represent the fastest tin-tops in Australia and in some cases, the fastest outright cars on a number of national circuits.

In 2014, the Kerrick Sports Sedan Series will contest five national circuit racing events across four states:

• Round One – 25-27 April, Mallala Motorsport Park

• Round Two – 13-15 June, Winton Motor Raceway

• Round Three – 8-10 August, Queensland Raceway

• Round Four – 19-21 September, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit

• Round Five – 17-19 October, Wakefield Park Motor Raceway
